Real Madrid Fans Voice Concerns Over Rüdiger Despite Club World Cup Win Against Juventus

Real Madrid may have edged past Juventus with a 1-0 victory in the Club World Cup, but some fans believe it’s time to address growing concerns about one key player: Antonio Rüdiger.

Young talent Gonzalo Garcia found the back of the net to seal the win, thanks to a pinpoint cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who notched his first assist for Madrid in just his fourth outing. The match also featured an outstanding display from Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, whose string of saves kept the tie competitive even as Madrid took control in the second half.

Despite the result moving Xabi Alonso’s side into the quarterfinals and keeping hopes of a first trophy under his leadership alive, not all is well in the backline. Antonio Rüdiger, recently returned from injury, has struggled to convince supporters. With Raul Asencio suspended and other defenders injured, the German centre-back has had an extended run in the starting XI, but his recent performances have drawn criticism.

Fans on social media were vocal:

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Rüdiger is starting to make me nervous.”

“His positioning and decisions both on and off the ball have been poor.”

“It’s time we had a serious conversation about Rüdiger.”

In light of these issues, Madrid took decisive action by triggering the £50 million release clause for Dean Huijsen, signing the Spanish international from Bournemouth. Huijsen has already established himself in Alonso’s plans, starting every match in the tournament so far with solid displays.

To patch up further gaps, Aurelien Tchouameni has been deployed as a temporary centre-back. Though a natural midfielder, the Frenchman has handled the role competently.

Injuries continue to deplete Madrid’s defense. David Alaba, who only recently returned from an ACL injury suffered in late 2023, has been sidelined again. Meanwhile, Eder Militao remains out as he continues his recovery from a similar setback.

Although defensive frailties remain a concern, Madrid's journey under Alonso appears to be progressing well, with promising young players stepping up and results going their way.
