Xabi Alonso Urges Real Madrid to Pursue Rodri in Ambitious Summer Move
Real Madrid’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, is making bold moves early into his tenure — and his latest reported request signals just how serious he is about reshaping the team’s midfield. According to Mundo Deportivo, Alonso has urged the club to try to sign Manchester City’s midfield maestro, Rodri, this summer.
Alonso, known for his cerebral approach to the game both as a player and now a coach, is said to believe the current Real Madrid midfield lacks a true deep-lying orchestrator. Despite the presence of young talent like Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga, Alonso is reportedly not convinced that any of them provide the same level of control, composure, and tactical intelligence as Rodri does in the holding role.
Rodri, widely considered one of the best midfielders in the world, has been a pillar of Pep Guardiola’s success at Manchester City. His influence was especially evident during City’s treble-winning season, where he consistently dictated the rhythm of play and anchored the team with his defensive positioning and passing range.
Alonso’s admiration for Rodri is no surprise, given that he played a similar role during his own time in Madrid’s midfield. Now, he views Rodri as a key piece in building a team capable of regaining European dominance.
However, bringing Rodri to the Santiago Bernabéu would be no easy task. Manchester City have no intention of letting their midfield general leave, and the Spaniard is under contract until 2027. Reports suggest Real Madrid would need to present a substantial offer — possibly over €100 million — to even begin a conversation.
Still, Alonso’s growing influence at the club could play a role. His vision for a tactically disciplined, possession-oriented side hinges on securing a player like Rodri. With Toni Kroos now retired and Luka Modrić entering the twilight of his career, the timing could be right for Madrid to secure a new midfield leader.
From Rodri’s side, a return to La Liga might become attractive in the coming years — especially under the guidance of a manager who fully understands and appreciates his playing style. While there’s no public indication yet from Rodri or his camp regarding a move, the interest from Madrid is now clear.
As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on whether Real Madrid are prepared to test Manchester City’s resolve — and if Alonso’s first major request as head coach will come to fruition.
